Lambert Folding Screen - Type 1

The Lambert is one of those pieces we keep making in new ways because clients keep finding new uses for it. A bedroom corner that needs softening. A room that needs an architectural accent. A loft that needs an entry where there isn't one. The largest we've made have stood full height behind a bed and headboard, the grid rising above the room as a piece of quiet architecture — for which we also make a dedicated Lambert Boiserie. The screen does what screens have always done — divides, conceals, suggests — and does it with the lightest possible footprint, folding flat when it isn't needed and standing where it's set when it is.

The Type 1 is the original. Each panel is a hardwood frame wrapped in a single field of leather or fabric, secured by bridle-leather belts at the rails. The wrapped construction means the front and back of the screen read slightly differently — the leather or fabric face on one side, the strapping and frame more visible on the other — which clients have sometimes chosen for, specifying a finished face and a working face, or specifying leather on one side backed by canvas for a quieter rear.

The metal hinges allow movement in either direction, so the screen can zig-zag, curve, or stand nearly flat to a wall. Three panels and up, in twenty-four-inch or thirty-six-inch widths, to seventy-seven or ninety-six inches tall, and we have made them as small as a custom five-panel at thirty-four inches and as long as a six-panel at one hundred twenty inches. Bespoke conversations welcome.

For a different construction — leather panels set into the frame, recessed slightly, with both faces identical — see the Lambert Folding Screen Type 2.
