Chatwin Lounge - Grand
The Chatwin Lounge began the collection—Richard's own rendering of a form he had quietly admired for years before he set about making one. It descends from the Roorkhee, known also as the Safari or British Officer's chair, designed by the Indian Army Corps of Engineers in the 1890s and built, like the colonial life it served, to come apart and travel elsewhere by morning. The Grand versions came later, drawn for the rooms and the sitters the original was never quite scaled to.
The Grand is that same lounge built larger—same provenance, same logic of joinery, same feel of leather strapping in tension across the frame, but offered in proportions for the room or the person who calls for them. Two versions are available.
Grand 1 holds the standard depth and adds only across the shoulders and overhead—two inches wider, two inches taller. It is the version one chooses when the room is right but the chair seems shy of it, or for the sitter whose frame the original simply does not fit.
Grand 2 is four inches deeper still, with a bolster cushion at the back to gather the difference. The seat invites a longer posture, a slower afternoon, the kind of evening that begins around six and ends around eleven without anyone announcing it.
