Chatwin Lounge Chair
The Chatwin Lounge is where the collection began. Richard had been a quiet admirer of the form for years before he set out to draw his own—the rare sighting of an old campaign lounge in a shop window or the corner of someone else's room had a way of stopping him on the spot. Eventually one stops admiring and starts making.
The chair descends from the Roorkhee—known also as the Safari or British Officer's chair—designed by the Indian Army Corps of Engineers in the 1890s and built, like the colonial life it served, to come apart and travel elsewhere by morning. It retains that logic still: every component breaks down without tools, an attribute easier to admire from across the room than to ever quite use at home, but reassuring nonetheless.
In its standard size it is the most compact lounge in the collection, and slips into rooms where larger lounges would be a nuisance: the foot of a bed, the side of a fireplace where one chair already lives, the bay window where one means to read.
For more generous proportions, the Lounge is also offered in the Grand—two larger versions, for rooms with more to give.
