Carden Console
The Carden was drawn first as a dining table. The console is that same design narrowed to the depth of a wall — and it turns out to have been a console all along, the crossed brace reading even better in profile than it ever did beneath a tabletop, with nothing above to hide it.
Where the round and oval tables gather a room to dinner, the console keeps to the edges — against a wall, behind a sofa, or the length of a hall. It is made in a wide range of hardwoods, with darkened or natural brass, or none, and its top can be inlaid with leather: a soft landing for keys and letters and whatever else collects by a door. Widths run from a modest 48 inches to a full 96, at depths of 12 to 24, drawn as narrow or as generous as the wall allows.
