Carden Dining Table
The Carden began where good tables often do — with a particular house and a particular requirement. A client whose house sat on the Sound, in Old Greenwich, wanted a dining table nautical in feeling — a piece with the quiet good manners of an elegant sailboat. The first was built in oiled teak with polished brass hardware — the teak of a ship's deck, the brass of its fittings — and it has set the tone for every Carden since.
The crossed brace beneath the top does its work in plain view, nothing hidden, the way a good boat carries its structure honestly. Should you want it, the dining table can also be made to extend — a concealed leaf on the X base, or the extending W base — opening for a larger gathering without breaking the line.
Rectangular to begin with, the Carden is made as readily round, oval, elliptical, or racetrack — the same brace and brass carried into a softer geometry. It narrows, too, into a console against the wall, its top inlaid with leather should you wish it. Drawn for a house on the water, it has since traveled inland and abroad, and has carried that sailboat in it ever since.
Every Carden is made to order. After we receive the chair dimensions and quantity, we determine the appropriate leg spacing and prepare shop drawings.
