Silbrook Console
We made the Silbrook console to be light on the eye — unlike the Matthiessen and Carden consoles that are rich with detail. The top is a clean plane, the legs taper gently as they fall, thinning the piece as the eye travels down. And rather than an apron closing the whole thing in, a long stretcher runs the length between the two sets of legs, bracing it end to end. Against the wall it reads less as an object than as a drawn line.
What holds it together is left in plain view, which is the point of it. At the top of each leg the tenon passes clean through and shows its end grain — It is honest joinery made to be looked at. At twelve inches deep it slips into the narrowest hall and takes a lamp, the post, and a considered stack of books without pressing on the room; run behind a sofa, it draws the same quiet line across the back of the room; and wanted as a desk, it offers the same clean plane to work from. It is made in the full range of twenty-six woods, from bleached white oak to ebonized walnut, in lengths to ninety-six inches and depths cut to the wall it's meant for.
