Chatwin Swivel Dining Stools - available in 3 backrest styles

Chatwin Swivel Dining Stool

The Chatwin Swivel Dining Stool came to the table by way of the bar. The first of its kind in the line was the Chatwin Tallback Swivel Stool, drawn for the kitchen island and the high counter—the round-footprint cousin of the Chatwin frame, set on a swivel so the conversation could turn without the chair having to be moved with it. The Finnbackfollowed, with its enveloping wraparound back drawn at the request of Studio Reed in London. Both lived comfortably at counter and bar heights for some years before the Opus One Winery in Napa Valley asked the obvious next question: could the same stool come down to the dining table?

The answer turned out to be yes, and rather happily so. A swivel at dining height suits the long meal—the diner who turns to the room behind, the host who turns to the sideboard mid-sentence, the guest who finds it easier to follow conversation from this side of the table than the one across. It is also unusually accommodating for rooms where the table is round, or where the seating is not quite fixed; the stool attends to whichever direction the evening takes.

Three backrest styles are offered, mirroring the counter and bar family.

The Tallback rises to a full back—generous enough to lean against properly, dignified enough to hold the head of a long table.

The Finnback offers a wraparound that curves like cupped hands—more enveloping than the Tallback, more sculptural in the room.

The Lowback meets the sitter at the small of the back and leaves the shoulders free—the most informal of the three, and the version that slips most readily beneath the table when the evening winds down.

All three are also offered as counter and bar stools, which is where the line began.
