Sindhu Dining Chair

Sindhu Dining Chair

The Sindhu is a fully upholstered dining chair with a tighter silhouette than its Chatwin forebear — cleaner in line, more upright in presence. Leather arm straps slope downward from the backrest, and the upholstered seat and back are set within the frame with open spaces between the two, a quiet detail that lets the eye pass through the chair and makes it feel lighter than its mass. It reads as a restrained piece in the room. It sits, when you sit in it, like a Chatwin.

The Sindhu came about because a designer asked a question. Sindhu Peruri, of San Francisco, sat in a Chatwin at Eche Martinez's room in the San Francisco Designer Showcase and decided she wanted a set for her own dining table. We started where most commissions start, talking about the Chatwin in walnut, in leather, with the standard arm height. Then she asked whether we could make it a little more streamlined. We talked for a while about what streamlined meant. As the conversation went on it became clear that she was not, in fact, asking for a slimmer Chatwin — she was asking for a different chair, cleaner in line, more upright in presence, lighter in the room, but one that sat like a Chatwin. The Chatwin's comfort had to come along; everything else was open. The Sindhu is the chair that conversation produced. It felt only natural to name it after her.
