Matthiessen Purse Stool

A handbag deserves a place of its own. The purse stool gives it one — off the floor, off the chair, within reach and out of the way. It stands fourteen inches — the height of a bag set down beside a chair rather than beneath it — and folds to a few inches when the evening is over. Beside a reading chair or at the end of a dining table it appears when it is needed and disappears when it is not.

The slings are cut from English bridle leather in black, dark chocolate, Havana, saddle, cognac, and coach — vegetable-tanned and unlined. They are also made from upholstery-weight leather bonded to saddle leather and stitched through, which holds the same tension and opens the palette to hundreds of colors. Twenty-five woods and finishes. Satin brushed stainless, blackened steel, or brass hardware. Made to order in Connecticut, with or without the saddle bag.
