Matthiessen Folding Bench
There is a particular kind of object that earns its place not by filling a room but by knowing when to leave it. The folding bench has always understood this. It is furniture with a certain self-possession — present when needed, gone when not, and untroubled by either condition.
The Matthiessen Folding Bench is built in solid hardwood, the frame jointed and finished in any of twenty-six woods from pale ash to deep walnut. The seat is a sling in leather — Garrett or Moore & Giles, in tiers that span from the quietly serviceable to the quietly exceptional. No cushion is standard; the leather does the work, and for most purposes does it well. When more is wanted, a cushion is available in half or full length, either floating free on the sling or secured with two leather belts, which is the more resolved solution and the one we tend to suggest.
It seats two comfortably at forty inches. At seventy-two, it accommodates four, or one person and several opinions about where things should go.
