Matthiessen Luggage Rack

Every well-considered guest room needs one object that does the quiet work of hospitality, and this is it: the low folding rack that receives the suitcase, so the suitcase need never make do with the floor or, worse, the foot of the bed. Named for Peter Matthiessen — who was rarely in one country long enough to unpack — the rack has a wandering spirit built into its bones. It folds flat, to under four inches, and slips behind a door or beneath a bed between visitors, with the good manners to disappear the moment it isn’t wanted.

The frame is a study in restraint. Oiled walnut, most often, though the shop keeps twenty-six woods and finishes on hand, light to dark, alongside a few specialty finishes we reserve for the more adventurous. Across it run straps of English bridle leather — that dense, waxed, saddlery-grade hide that only improves with a decade of handling — in black, dark chocolate, Havana, saddle, cognac, or coach.

The hardware is yours to choose as well, from blackened steel, satin stainless steel, to lacquered brass. For those who prefer stitchwork, the straps can be made bespoke, in laminated and stitched upholstery leather in any color you can name.

Add the optional Matthiessen Tray and the rack turns obliging in a second direction — a surface for the morning coffee, the folded sweaters, the book set down mid-chapter — and earns its keep long after the guests have gone.
