Collingwood Falconer's Kit

Collingwood Falconer's Kit

Falconry is the oldest of the field sports and easily the most encumbered. The bird needs next to nothing; the falconer, by long tradition, needs a great deal — hoods and jesses, a glove worn soft as a second skin, a lure, the small grave apparatus of a partnership conducted entirely on the hawk's terms. For most of its history the sport moved by horse and saddlebag, and the falconer who traveled well was simply the one who packed well.

The Collingwood Falconer's Kit is built for that older art of packing well. Clad in hand-stitched leather, edged in oiled walnut, and fitted throughout in darkened brass, the trunk and its companion Falcon Carrier Case open into something nearer a portable encampment. Down the left, three bays carry two Chatwin dining chairs in their fitted cases and a folding table — the civilized half of the expedition, ready to be set down wherever the day requires.

The right side holds the working half. Two leather boxes lift out whole and travel on without the trunk, carrying the day's apparatus the rest of the way to the field: a perch with its base and ground stake, hoods and hood savers, anklets, gloves, a leash. Below them sits a backgammon board by Alexandra Llewellyn, its field inlaid with a falcon in marquetry — a frank admission that falconry is, for the most part, a matter of waiting, and that the waiting is best done well.

The Falcon Carrier Case earns its name: vented, strapped, and built around the one passenger in the whole assembly that breathes. Whether it ever carries a bird is, of course, beside the point. The Kit is made to expedition standard for an expedition its owner is welcome never to take — packed, provisioned, and waiting somewhere just off the dining room.
