Cabourn Dining Chair
The Cabourn Dining Chair is available in folding or non-folding versions. Now available in an armless version - see image 17
The Cabourn Folding Chair takes its name from Nigel Cabourn, the British designer whose archives lean heavily on expedition wear — polar parkas, climbing breeches, the ingenious kit men once wore up mountains. The affinity is direct enough. This is a chair made in much the same spirit: quietly useful, beautifully built, and prepared, when the room needs to be something else, to fold itself out of the way.
Two English bridle leather belts hold it open. Loosen them and the chair folds; the same two belts then cinch it shut for the closet, the back of the car, or the hut at the foot of whatever mountain you happen not to be climbing. A small piece of theatre, but the engineering is honest — the belts that do the work are also the latch.
We recently sent twenty to a nature reserve in Namibia. Of all the Cabourn chairs we've made, this order was the first to live the life they were designed for. The rest, we should say, are perfectly comfortable — and perfectly romantic — even if they never leave the dining room.
We've always thought the Cabourn a stool in a chair: a compact, candid base with a back that arrived later and decided to stay.
This chair is available as folding or non-folding.
