Arca Sound Console

The cabinet extends nearly fourteen feet, constructed in three sections from eucalyptus that has been ebonized through a process older than most finishing methods now in common use. The wood is solid throughout, its front corners curved in a manner that required the timber to be shaped with considerable care.

In the center section, six drawers are fitted—three shallow, three deeper—each with a pull formed as a recess cut directly from the wood. At either end, curved doors conceal compartments for subwoofers, the door faces covered with acoustic fabric from Duvaltex Guilford of Maine, though this can be omitted if a more conventional cabinet is required.

The dark finish is achieved by dissolving steel wool in vinegar and applying the solution by hand—a technique employed by craftsmen across generations. The eucalyptus accepts it unevenly at first, requiring repeated applications until the color settles into the grain. The result is not true black but a deep brown that reveals its depth only under certain light. After the chemical reaction has run its course, the surface is sealed with oil.

The piece was made for a particular interior but can be built to other specifications. It will accommodate audio equipment, books, or objects requiring storage along a wall.
